Deep Style Transfer

Picture
Deep style transfers use a deep neural network to borrow stylistic elements from one image and apply them to the composition of another. With this technique, I can take photographs of paint and apply them to 3d renders or photographs of people and create the illusion of painted illustrations. The technology isn't perfect, but it creates some compelling images. I use it to stir my imagination and help me figure out what direction my illustrations are going. Some of these deep style transfers create images that are impressive in their own right.
The above images were made from a photograph of Mahafsoun--Iranian model, belly dancer, and singer. The style used is taken from a painting by Gustav Klimt. Click them. If you extract the frames of a video and perform a deep style transfer on each frame, you get a result that looks something like a drawn/painted animation. Here's a short animation of a scene from The Fountain.
